One Skillet Italian Sausage and Tortellini

Ingredients

Here are the ingredients for this one skillet Italian Pasta!

Extra Virgin Olive Oil – For the best tasting dishes, always use a good quality olive oil.

Onion – I always have yellow onions on hand but any onion will do in a pinch!

Garlic – You can’t have an Italian dish without garlic!

Italian Sausages – You can use either links and remove the casing or buy bulk Italian sausage for this one skillet Italian Sausage and Tortellini.

Cherry Tomatoes – Adding cherry tomatoes to the marinara sauce adds flavor and texture to the sauce.

Marinara Sauce – Use your favorite jarred marinara sauce or try my 10 Marinara Marinara Sauce!

Beef Broth – Beef broth adds a depth of flavor when cooking the tortellini.

Frozen Tortellini – I love having a bag of this in the freezer for easy meals like this one! You can use either cheese filled or sausage filled!

Baby Spinach – Grab some fresh baby spinach from the produce department. This meal is a great way to sneak in those greens!

Heavy Cream – A little cream makes the sauce rich and creamy.

Parmesan Cheese – Another Italian staple! Be sure to grab freshly grated parmesan cheese.

Fresh Basil – Not only is fresh basil used in the sauce as a way to add flavor, but we’ll use a bit for garnish as well.

Salt and Pepper – Just to taste!

Making One Skillet Italian Sausage and Tortellini

This requires only one skillet so grab your favorite skillet just be sure it has a lid!

Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Once the olive oil is heated, add the diced onion and minced garlic and saute for 2-3 minutes or until softened and fragrant. Season with salt and pepper, to taste.

To the same skillet, add the Italian sausage. If you are using links, break them apart with a wooden spoon. Cook until the sausage is brown and mostly cooked through or about 4-5 minutes.

Add the sliced cherry tomatoes, marinara sauce, and beef broth to the skillet. Increase the heat to medium-high and bring it to a boil.

Tip: To easily cut cherry tomatoes in half, place the tomatoes between two deli lids and press down lightly with the palm of one hand and slice through the tomatoes all at the same time with a serrated knige between the two lids.

Add the frozen tortellini and cover with a lid. Reduce the heat to medium and cook to the lowest time on the tortellini package instruction for al dente, which is usually around 6-8 minutes.

Once the tortellini is al dente, remove the cover and stir in the baby spinach and heavy cream.

Stirring the baby spinach and heavy cream into the one pot Italian sausage pasta.

Continue cooking for 1-2 minutes or just until the spinach wilts. Remove from the heat and season with salt and pepper, as desired. Just remember the parmesan cheese will add saltiness to the dish as well.

Stir in the parmesan cheese and fresh basil.

Ingredients
  

  • 2 Tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 medium Onion diced
  • 2 medium garlic cloves minced
  • ½ pound Italian Sausage casing removed if using links
  • 2 cups Cherry Tomatoes halved
  • 3 Cups Marinara Sauce
  • 1 cup Beef Broth
  • 12 oz frozen tortellini not thawed
  • 3 cups Baby Spinach fresh
  • ¼ cup Heavy Cream
  • ½ cup Parmesan Cheese freshly grated
  • ¼ cup fresh Basil leaves roughly chopped plus more for garnish
  • Salt and Pepper to taste

Instructions
 

  • In a large skillet with a lid, heat olive oil over medium heat.
  • Add the diced onion and minced garlic and saute until softened and fragrant, about 2-3 minutes. Season with salt and pepper, to taste.
  • Add the Italian sausage to the skillet, breaking them apart with a wooden spoon. Cook until brown and mostly cooked through, about 4-5 minutes.
  • Add the sliced cherry tomatoes, marinara sauce, and beef broth.
  • Increase the heat to medium-high and bring the sauce to a boil.
  • Add the frozen tortellini and cover with a lid. Reduce the heat to medium and cook to the lowest time on the tortellini package instructions, usually about 6-8 minutes.
  • Uncover and stir in the baby spinach and heavy cream.
  • Cook for an additional 1-2 minutes or until the spinach wilts.
  • Remove the skillet from the heat and adjust the seasoning with salt and pepper as desired, keeping in mind that parmesan will add additional saltiness to the dish.
  • Stir in the freshly grated parmesan cheese and fresh basil.
  • Serve immediately!
  • Enjoy!
